The story behind the story…

In September of 2000, HomeAid Colorado, a chapter of HomeAid America, a 501(c) 3 non-profit corporation affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), heard about CHF’s programs and approached us with an offer to build additional transitional housing for the organization. Since that initial contact, CHF and HomeAid have worked together to establish an expansion plan in response to the rising homeless population in Denver.

The expansion project included the construction and development of 3 duplexes or a total of 6 units for our transitional housing program. Each duplex includes a 2 and a 3-bedroom unit with 1 ½ baths. The 2-bedroom unit has a garage, as required by the City of Arvada, for off street parking. Construction for the expansion project began in 2003. The first duplex was completed in February and the second duplex was completed in December.

In 2003, after building the first two duplexes, HomeAid of America came to CHF to film a documentary about the agency, program and the stories of the transformed lives of the residents. A contact with the Television Show, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition asked HomeAid of America to nominate a list of non-profit homeless shelters and transitional housing organizations to build a home or shelter. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition selected CHF out of a nation wide search of shelters and agencies.

In September 2004, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition contacted CHF with an offer to include the building of the last duplex by HomeAid Colorado, complete the recreational area and remodel the main floor of the Family Educational and Resource Center as an episode on the show.

CHF interviewed and recommended 8-10 families to the television producers. The producers of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition made the final selection.

They started construction on Tuesday, November 16, 2004 and the duplex was finished in an amazingly short 79 hours. The “Big Reveal” was filmed on Sunday, November 21.st The 2-hour episode aired on February 13, 2005. It was an extremely exciting time.
