Programs Offered

CHF has developed a particularly creative approach to support homeless families. To reduce overhead expenses, CHF has organized the homeless families into an effective volunteer core. All parents in the CHF transitional housing program are required to contribute 5 hours per month of volunteer service toward the upkeep of the properties and surroundings. The CHF "family volunteers" perform a variety of tasks. Each individual utilizes their own talents and skills to improve their environment and to assist other homeless families.

The tasks include cleaning the office, painting properties, maintaining lawn care, serving in the CHF food bank and warehouse, or providing child care for those with small children for other families while they perform their community service work.

The residents take pride in their accomplishments. Working together establishes a spirit of unity and cooperation among the residents, as well as fostering increased self-worth. Children frequently help their parents with community service, which instills the value of being a contributing member of society. Since CHF is a multi-cultural community, community service fosters mutual respect among adults and children from different cultures.

In 2004 CHF residents donated a total of 6,180 hours. For more details about types of volunteer activities, please see the Volunteer Attachment.
